University of Southampton, Global Health Research Institute
The Global Health Research InstituteThe Global Health Research Institute took shape in 2014 following a conference to see how an institute could help pull together the many pieces of research and expertise at the university and hospital, provide visibility for global health research and develop its own distinct research portfolio.
It now has four roles
- raising the visibility of global health
- collaboration across the Faculty of Medicine and the wider University
- enhancing education and research capacity and developing careers
- engaging with communities and policy makers for impact
Within it are the following specialised areas of work: -

- Infectious Diseases : Those particularly relevant to global health include influenza, TB, HIV, meningitis, pneumonia, chamydia HCV and diagnostics.
- Ageing and Lifelong Health : Research is aimed at addressing the increasing number of older people in the global population that will create pressure on traditions systems of support.
- Sustainable Development and Health : Research is focused on the alleviation of poverty (particularly the rural poor), nutritional health, food security and their link to ecosystem services
- Lifecourse : This includes the developmental origins of health and disease and the main hub includes the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit alongside the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (Nutrition) and the nstitute of Developmental Sciences.
